"Tex" Hill Wing Goes ZERO

On Sunday, September 17, 2017, the "Tex" Hill Wing team turned out for the ZERO Prostate Cancer Walk/Run at Mission County Park. We did so in memory of Col. John Gibeau, who died of prostate cancer in January of 2017. He was just 74.

Thanks to all who turned out, including the friends of the "Tex" Hill Wing who joined us. Over a 1000 people participated in the event.

Getting Closer!

Ole Yeller is getting closer and closer to completion of her restoration. Clean it, polish it, paint it, or replace it. Nothing has been left untouched. Hats off to the "Tex" Hill Wing work crews that have made this a labor of love!

Restoration Making Progress

The Restoration Crew is getting mighty meticulous. Take a look at these before and after pics of the fuel control valve. Ole Yeller is going to look mighty purty when all is done!

Ole Yeller Engine Ready to Roll!

A hardworking crew of "Tex" Hill Wing members (many thanks guys and gals!) pulled the R1340AN-1 550 h.p. Pratt and Whitney radial engine off of Old Yeller this week in preparation for a trip to be overhauled. It rolls out Thursday morning.

Here is a picture of the engine on an engine stand, loaded and ready to go. Safe journey Charlie and R1340!

Ole Yeller Gets A Bath!

Ole Yeller had her first bath in awhile. Thanks Charlie for bringing your steam cleam cleaner! Thanks Jared for wielding the pressure hose!

She is at least 50# lighter after having all the accumulated gunk removed.

Alright. The engine stand just arrived. Time to pull the engine for an overhaul!

Ole Yeller Propless!

June 27, 2017 - Our SNJ-4 restoration has begun. First the prop comes off, next the engine. Soon she'll be purring like a radial kitten with a newly overhauled front end. Thanks to Col. Russ (shown examining the engine) for breaking out the wrenches so soon after her arrival!

Ole Yeller Is Home!

June 21, 2017. It was a short trip. Depart San Marcos, arrive Stinson Airport. Uneventful. The pilot, Col. David Oliver, Vice President of CAF Operations, was at the controls.

He said Ole Yeller performed smoothly, as though she knew she was headed to a new tour of duty, and was eager to get to it.

And, for the "Tex" Hill Wing, it was a very exciting thing to happen on a late morning, hot Wednesday.

Our SNJ had arrived at its new home! We gave her a water cannon salute, rolled out red carpet, and everyone clapped their approval.

There was cake and punch, a round of toasts, lots of hands touching her and cameras clicking. She was made to feel totally welcome in her new home.

Finally, the crowd subsided, and it was time to park Ole Yeller in her hangar.

Now begins the real work of an engine overhaul, some restoration maintenance, culminating in a new paint job. She will proudly wear the Commemorative Air Force logo, indicating she is one of the squadron. She will also wear a "Tex" Hill Wing logo to show that she is ours to enjoy.

Ole Yeller Comes to Stinson Airport

On Wednesday, June 21, 2017, our newly acquired SNJ "Ole Yeller" will be flown from it current home to its new home at the Stinson Airport. The estimated time of arrival is 11:00 A.M. There will be festivities to celebrate its arrival, including a cake and even a red carpet! Come be a part of it!

New aircraft for the "Tex" Hill Wing!

June 9th was a momentous day for the "Tex" Hill Wing as we took responsibility for an SNJ-4 that was donated to the Wing.

Read the whole story and check out the videos on the "Ole Yeller" page or click here.

This is just the beginning of a whole new chapter in the history of the "Tex" Hill Wing. Be sure to check back often.

"Tex" Hill Wing moves to Stinson Airport

On April 1, 2017, the "Tex Hill Wing will officially hold its first meeting in its new home at Stinson Aiport in San Antonio. After being at the South Texas Regional Aiport from 2008 until 2016, the wing determined that it needed to relocate to a more densely populated location to continue and grow. After much soul searching and discussion, the wing concluded that Stinson Airport would be an appropriate location.

The Stinson Airport has an ongoing education outreach initiative which the wing will become part of, developing activities that present historic events about, or related to our namesake, Davidl Lee "Tex" Hill, during both WWII and the Korean and Vietman eras.

We look forward with eager anticipation to continue honoring our veterans and active military.
